Nontraditional Last Name Stories

Rhythm Kenaley-Lundberg

(Originally had mother’s last name only)

Interviewee: Amanda Cahn, Written account

My mom’s last name is Kenaley, and I originally took that, but then Dennis, my step dad, suggested we all add his name, Lundberg, to our last names because my mom and him never got married.

Kenaley is Irish. It was originally MckNealey or something like that, but when my ancestors came to America, around the time of the potato famine, it was changed at Ellis Island, to Kenaley.

Lundberg is Swedish, and other than that, I really don’t know much about it. I think it means something like trees on a hill, or forest on a mountain.

My biological father’s last name is Lyons. I think it is of English, most likely British, decent.

When my mom and dad had me, they didn’t take my father’s last name because they were rebellious teenagers that traveled with the Rainbow Gathering, and had different beliefs.
