Nontraditional Last Name Stories

Christina Anderson

Christina Anderson divorced & kept her ex-husband’s name, retaining her maiden name as a middle name. When she later had a daughter with a man she didn’t marry, she gave her daughter her–also ex-husband’s—name. “She knows she has my name, but I don’t think that makes her feel any less connected to her father,” Christina says. She remembers that she did consider giving their daughter her father’s name as a middle name, but didn’t because his is really long and difficult to spell: “I didn’t want her to deal with that for the rest of her life… She does sometimes joke that if she did have her father’s name she would never be able to spell it anyways.”
